Welcome back!
Kathleen DesMaisons, PhD, was one of the speakers at the “Brain Repair” conference I attended last month. She is author of “Potatoes Not Prozac“, Little Sugar Addicts” and others. She has more than 30 years experience working in public health, nutrition, and children’s health.
Children are especially vulnerable to sugar and sugar sensitivity can be linked to behavior, health and emotions. Imbalances in brain and body chemistry are the cause of low serotonin, low beta-endorphin and volatile blood sugar. Consequently, kids react to sugar as if it were a drug, embarking on a craving and crashing cycle.
Dr. DesMaisons advocates modifying children’s biochemistry by changing their diets.
Below are her seven steps that will free you from the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde Syndrome of sugar sensitivity.
7 Steps to Sugar Stability
1. Eat breakfast with protein
2. Journal what you eat and how you feel
3. Eat three meals a day with protein (no more than 5 hours between meals)
4. Take the recommended vitamins and have a potato before bed
5. Shift from white foods to brown foods
6. Reduce or eliminate sugars
7. Create a new life
