Welcome back!
College students are now buying and selling Provigil illegally to stay alert while studying like they do with Ritalin and Adderall.
Watch out, because recent research shows evidence that Provigil (generic name, modafinil) might be more addictive than originally thought.
Researchers led by Nora D. Volkow, MD, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), published the study in the March issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
Provigil is FDA approved for promoting wakefulness in people with narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder. It is classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration as a Schedule IV drug.
“There is an increasing use of this medication, and people have promoted the off-label use of stimulants and Provigil as cognitive enhancers with the belief that these drugs are safe”. “But these drugs have side effects, and their use without proper medical oversight could lead to abuse and addiction.”
The new study is the first human evidence that a typical dose of modafinil affects dopamine in the brain as much as a dose of Ritalin, a controlled substance with clear potential for dependence.
Provigil has been on the market since 1999 from Cephalon Inc. of Frazer, PA, and its sales approached $1 billion last year!
